Tourism in West Bengal
Foreign arrivals, UNESCO recognition, Durga Puja impact, and the air-connectivity opportunity for Kolkata.
West Bengal is India's #2 state for foreign tourist arrivals — 3.12 million visitors in 2024, nearly double the pre-COVID peak. Durga Puja's economic impact is estimated at $4.53 billion (WB Tourism Dept; no independent study available). The ceiling is air connectivity: Kolkata gets fewer than 10% of Delhi's international flights.
Key figures & data tables
West Bengal received 3.12 million foreign tourist visits, rank #2 in India and 14.92% of the national total — up 14.8% year on year. Domestic tourism is far larger: 228 million domestic tourist visits in 2023, against 82.84 million in 2019, or 9.09% of India’s 2509.63 million.
Arrivals are heavily seasonal. October carries 12.5% of the year’s footfall in West Bengal against 9.4% for India — the Durga Puja effect. Kolkata branded hotels ran 65.7% occupancy at an average daily rate of ₹6,820 (2023 CY (HVS India 2024 edition)).
Durga Puja itself was measured at ₹32,377 crore (US$4.5 billion) in 2019by the British Council’s creative-economy study, supporting 40,000+ artisans. UNESCO inscribed Durga Puja in Kolkata on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021 — the first festival from Asia to be so recognised. Air connectivity is the constraint: Kolkata handles 51 international flights a day against 590 at Delhi and 516 at Mumbai.
